Nordic Skiing Safety
Safe ski touring is a top priority for the Willamette Chapter of the Oregon Nordic Club. Whether you’re skiing on gentle, marked trails or exploring challenging backcountry routes, our goal is to help you have a safe and enjoyable experience.
Our Approach to Safety
Cross-country skiing involves inherent risks. That’s why we encourage all members to:
- Choose trips that match their current skill level
- Continuously improve their skiing, navigation, and snow safety awareness
- Travel with experienced leaders who know the terrain and conditions
Important: Trail maps, trip descriptions, and reports on this site are not intended for independent travel. Many trails are unmarked and unpatrolled. Winter navigation can be difficult—even for experienced skiers.
Avalanche Awareness
Avalanches can occur near Santiam Pass and other areas we frequent. Always check the Mt. Hood Avalanche Forecast before heading out:
- Northwest Avalanche Center – Mt. Hood Forecast
If you’re unsure about the day’s conditions, it’s best to wait. The mountains will still be there tomorrow.
Skill Levels for Club Trips
Each trip is rated to help you choose the right level:
- A – Easy: Basic skills, mostly flat terrain, a few miles
- B – Intermediate: Up to 10+ miles, moderate hills, 1,000+ ft elevation gain
- C – Advanced: Backcountry terrain, steep slopes, longer duration
- D – Expert: Challenging terrain, high elevation, long distances
Always contact the trip leader in advance to discuss your experience and gear.
